The ship was the oldest of the Princess fleet and it shows. There was difficulty finding fully functioning bathrooms on the ship. Most area decorations are dated and worn looking. The inclusive dinners were hit or miss. The Buffett options got old by the end of the cruise. Most fruit was unripe and vegetables were limited. Entertainment venues filled early and many people were not seated. The fitness room was stuffy and hot, not enjoyable at all when the views were pretty. I preferred walking the decks. We had an extremely noisy room and the front desk said they could not move us. Why do they put rooms across from the main service entrance for the staff for the floor. We heard each time the door opened and slammed closed. Then the carts were noisy going over the threshold. Not much fun at 6-6:30 am! So much for a free upgrade to a room with a view. We will not be traveling with Princess again Read Less

Won this cruise through casino. First cruise, and was looking forward to great food..unfortunately some meals were actually inedible. We dined with the anytime service which was not explained, so we did not find our actual dining room (we thought the buffet area was where we should eat because we got turned away in other dining areas) for the first few days..also had a spa experience, the facial was okay but the hard sell for facial products and fillers was over the top to the point where I made an appointment for fillers just to get out of there and had my husband cancel it when we got back to the room. Also found the same facial products online for half the price which was really upsetting because I had purchased one of them. The entire cruise was based around art shows and auctions that were trying to sell gaudy paintings for huge prices. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had never been on the Pacific side of Mexico, nor San Francisco. As such, we visited first-time ports of call, and we also spent several days in San Francisco exploring the city as well as surrounding historical attractions. In my opinion, no one does the embarkation or disembarkation better than Princess cruises. Due to staying in San Francisco for several days prior to the cruise, we arrived in port earlier than expected (During what I would consider peak embark time) and after dropping our luggage at the pier we waltzed right onto the ship. There were no lines to stand in, no wait time, and the staff was extremely efficient. Within minutes we were seated at the International Cafe enjoying a cup of coffee. In regards to disembarkation, again, no one seems to do it better than Princess. We were off the ship, picked up our luggage, and through customs fifteen minutes before our scheduled disembark time. There were no long lines, no waiting time, just about perfect. The ship's layout was easy to learn and follow, but it definitely showed its age. However, on the positive side, the Grand was scheduled for dry dock immediately after this cruise, so it should be in tip-top shape when it sets off on the next sailing towards the end of March 2019. Even though the ship needed some updates, the staff kept the public areas, dining venues, and state rooms spotless. Actually, when it comes to service, we have been on numerous cruises and never experienced a friendlier more willing to serve crew on any previous cruise. Always a smile, a helping hand, and great service. We stayed in a balcony cabin (A215) which was adequate in size, decent bathroom (Shower, no bathtub), and enough storage for the two of us. The bed was very comfortable and Normando kept the room spotless. Also, aside from the cabin balcony, if you want some quiet time in the sun the Sanctuary Sundeck, Pool, and Hot tubs are the place to go. Overall there is a good variety to choose from when it comes to eating on the ship, but the specialty restaurants were fantastic in all phases. The main dining room and Lido deck buffet was what one would expect with a decent menue and service. The grill and pizza service were great for a light lunch or snack and the International Cafe is still my favorite spot to start the day or grab a quick cup of coffee. We also ate at the Crown Gill and Sabatini's on this cruise and they were excellent; the atmosphere, the service, the food, everything from start to finish was worth the reservation. My wife and I both really enjoyed the entertainment from the stage shows that included a magician, comedian, and singers/dancers, to the smaller Piazza venues with trios and individual musicians. The Born to Dance show to close the cruise was one of the best, if not the best, cruise show performances we have ever seen. In regards to ports of call, we enjoyed visiting San Francisco prior to the cruise and Cabo San Lucas was our favorite port of call during the cruise. In order of the intinerary: San Francisco, California There is a lot to do here if you have never been in San Francisco before, Muir Woods, Napa Valley, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf and such. Extend your vacation and stay a day or two before or after your cruise. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Unfortunately, I did not visit this port as I caught a pretty good cold and opted to stay on the ship. But hey, there is a Walmart just off the pier, what more could you ask for! (Just kidding) Manzanillo, Mexico Didn't see much of the city, but did the turtle excursion instead. It was a little underwhelming, but hopefully the monies are used to support turtle research and protection. Mazatlan, Mexico We explored Mazatlan on our own. There was plenty to see and do and it is worth the time to get off the ship and take a trip into the city. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico We took a whale watching excursion in Cabo and luckily they were very active on our port day. After the excursion we ventured around the marina and visited some of the little local shops. Weather was beautiful and a great day for a walk. As I stated earlier in the review, we have been on numerous cruises and never experienced a friendlier more willing to serve staff on any previous cruise; always a smile, a helping hand, and great service. Overall, this cruise was near seemless from beginning to end. From embarkation to disembark it was a very relaxing getaway; the food was adequate, entertainment very good, service was excellent, and the crew was the friendliest ever experienced. This cruise may have been a little heavy on sea days for some, but I wouldn't hesitate to take this cruise again or recommend this itinerary or ship to anyone. Now, if I could have just bottled the warm weather and taken it home (NW Ohio) with us, that would have been the perfect ending! Read Less

This was kind of a last minute cruise for us, booking only about 2 months out. We have been to most of the ports we visited, except for Manzanillo. We are platinum captains circle with princess, so this looked like a good cruise. We flew into SFO the night before the cruise, arriving around midnight. We stayed in the travelodge near the airport. It was ok for getting 5 hours of sleep. Old, but clean. No breakfast. We rented an alamo car from the airport and drove to fishermans wharf early the next morning. He has 8:45 reservations to go see Alcatraz. We drove to the princess pier early, around 8, to see if we could drop our bags, but there was no one there to take them. Alcatraz was awesome, but it was also cold. Even though we had down parkas, hats, and gloves, it was still cold, damp, and windy. We still thought it was worth it. After getting back from Alcatraz we shopped for some toiletries at a nearby Safeways. It was very expensive, and everything was locked up behind plexiglass doors. We had to get a salesperson to unlock the doors to buy shampoo, soap, lotion, and sunscreen. I guess this is because of the huge transient problem in San Fransisco. We dropped of the car at the local Alamo and walked the 1/2 mile to the ship. It was now just after noon. Even though there were a lot of passengers checking in, we really didn't have to wait in line. We have priority boarding with our platinum status, but we really didn't get on any faster than everyone else. The embarkation process went pretty smooth. The ship is old, and it shows. This was the last cruise before going in to dry dock for 2 weeks. Hopefully they are able to spruce it up a bit. The first 3 at sea days from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta were not real warm. Average temperature was only 50's to low 60"s, so we didn't spend a lot of time outside. We did run to outside deck 7 walkway for exercise. The 4 days in port were nice, 70's to low 80"s. Puerto Vallarta We did the princess zipline and rappelling excursion through Outdoor adventures. A bit pricey at $150, but a lot of fun. I would recommend this tour. Just beware, they will charge you $90-$150 for pictures at the end of the excursion. You can't take your own photos. Manzanillo We scuba dove in Manzanillo. We had a good time. We were afraid the water would be cold, but it was ok with 5 mm wetsuits. Not the Caribbean, but it was fun. Mazatlan Took a cab to the golden zone to go shopping. Bought a few things. Walked on the beach. Walked along the Malecon. Then caught a Pulmonia back to the ship. Cabo San Lucas Walked to the beach. We were going to take a water taxi, but we got so tired of the vendors trying to up sell us on a glass bottom boat tour that we just ended up walking. It probably took us about 30 minutes. We found a vendor on the beach who rented up an umbrella and two lounges. I think we paid $30. We probably got ripped of. Oh well, we had a good time sitting on the beach, reading, and people watching. We walked back to the ship in the early afternoon, doing a little souvenir shopping along the way. We happened to walk past the fire station, and they have a small gift shop. I bought a Cabo San Luca Police long sleeve t-shirt there. The had police and firefighter souvenirs for sale for any cops or firefighers that visit Cabo. It was amazing, the temperature went from 81 degrees in Cabo, to 61 degrees for a high the next day heading back to San Francisco. The food and service was very good in the dining room and buffet. The pizza on the lido deck is very good. They did not have free hot chocolate on this ship like the Island Princess did last year when we went to Alaska. It was $2.50 for a cup in the international cafe. We did the pub lunch on 2 of the at sea days. Good fish and chips and good prawns. I loved the bread pudding dessert. The free ice cream cones on the lido deck were hit and miss. Sometime kind of ice milky, other times very good and creamy. Entertainment The princess shows were just ok. The comedian was very good. The instrumentalist was very good. The early shows were always full, sometimes filling up 30 minutes before the shows. Plenty of seating in the later shows. We loved the trivia on the ship. We paired up with 2 other couples we met on the ship and won around 6 different trivia games. There were plenty of other activities going on throughout the day. Disembarkation was smooth. We did self walk off around 8:15. Walked right off. Very short wait at customs. We had a good time on this cruise and would do it again in the future. Read Less

the once great Princess has now taken to cheapening the cruise experience and their management appears to have instituted nickel and dime philosophy which will probably lead to pay toilets :-). The Crown Grill has raised their prices. cut drastically the quality of their meats, changed the policy so that you can only order ONE man entree order whereas in the Main Dining room you can order as many entrees as you like for NO additional charge. Princess has decided to encourage brain dead morons with their face glued to their phones rather than the social graces of conversation. Case and point they have eliminated the buy one get one free drink hours that was the last bastion of meeting new people over CONVERSATION .. The great games we so enjoy like Trivia are now corrupted by these technology addicts who feel the need to cheat by using their phones to win a plastic coaster, water bottle , address book or wine stopper! Yet these losers seem to be the kind of morons the management of Princess Cruises wants to attract The quality of the shows has deteriorated , the cruise directors staff does nothing about the cheating, and can't explain the new Mystery game lol Princess in an effort to continue to reduce service and cheapen the experience has taken the best two GOOD meals....the Beef Wellington and the Lobster and made them available ONLY on the same night for dinner. We won't talk about the poor guest service people who are forced to lie to defend these new management practices.....Let's just say they try to make things right but are told not to put anything in writing so Princess can overcharge for services you've purchases like the drink package The Grand Princess was in horrific shape but we were told the ship was going to DRY DOCK for a makeover right after our cruise. Honestly it would take a month just to remover the rust around the balconies something I've never seen on any of my previous Princess Cruises. I use to love Princess, but there new management is determined to destroy a once great Cruise line to increase their salaries no doubt LOL The things Princess still does well are the Embarkation procedures and the staff and crew on the ships are top notch. Everything that is ruining the cruise experience on Princess is coming from management or should I say mismanagement ..It's a shame a bunch of management losers can do this to a once great line. They are doing their best to take the FUN out of cruising Read Less

Friends have been touting the Princess Line to us for several years and we chose it on a whim. The size and old refined elegance of the ship was impressive. The food was outstanding and the service was exemplary. Only negative of the ship was the entertainment; the atrium piano player who sang show tunes, was okay for a while, but he then became overpowering and annoying. Also, we wish there was a venue of performers that sang/performed other types of music, like jazz or blues. We dined in the DaVinci dining hall and thoroughly enjoyed our waiter Heuerto and assistant waiter, Evalinda. The variety of menu options was good and suggestions from wait staff were on target with our culinary desires. We did not take any excursions offered by the cruise line but chose to go off and choose our own. The groups were smaller and we could tell tour guide exactly where and what we wished to tour, plus it was less expensive. Overall, the cruise was enjoyable. Read Less

Pros: entertainment, food (some days), burgers, ship mouvement Cons: small cabin( please take canine higher than deck 8, foods (the other days), ice cream. Ship is old but well structured. Not as bad as some reviews say. Buffet food some days great, some others just ok. Dining restaurants good, not so great as expected. After the short summary above here comes the story of our cruise. Cruise embarkation was excellent. No lines, no walking miles till the cruise ship. After embarkation we had the one and only unpleasant surprise; our cabine emerald (deck 8) 202, was the smallest we ever cruised (we have cruised twice with carnival, one with royal, one with Msc, one with celebrity, all balconies). Even worst, in front of our balcony there was open deck with crossing passenger, so some times we felt awkward. That was our worst experience, everything else was fine. Ship although old, was well maintained but some rust was visible to the open decks, and to the ship sides. I expected a little better food. Some days the food was excellent, some others not so... excellent but you could find what you like and be satisfied, even the "not so good " days. Finally I stand for the best part of our cruise and that was the entertainment. Plenty things to do and to see, I liked mostly the comedy magician, and all comic acts in generally. Read Less

We wanted to go to the Mexican Riviera, especially Mazatalan and Puerta Vallarta. San Francisco was chilly when we departed, but always breathtaking sailing under the GG bridge. Princess new pier is terrific and embarkation was quick and slick. Because it was cold during transit, we hung out a lot at Crooners bar. The martinis were delicious but the bartenders and wait staff were the best I ever experienced. Our cabin, a balcony, was quite comfortable. The bathroom was very functional with adequate room. Our room steward was quietly competent. We chose the traditional dining option. Food was excellent every night and the wait staff was the best I ever had in 12 cruises. The afternoon English PUB Lunch was really yummy and a nice change of pace to the buffet. Exceptional service and great food is what you'll get on Grand Princess. Every member of the crew was happy and eager to serve! Read Less

We have cruised before and like Princess. This cruise exceeded our expectations. The ship was miraculously clean and looked great. Yes, it's not new, but that wasn't an issue. Boarding in San Fran was the normal controlled chaos, though I am disabled, but not in a wheel chair and was not accommodated. On the ship and excursions staff were more than happy to assist. I got the feeling that folks really liked their jobs. Our steward was great, as were the wait staff at the traditional dining which we prefer. There were only 3 production shows. We miss them. They did have other shows with magicians and comedians that were good. Our cruise was 10 days. The first 3.5 were sea days, then 4 days of ports, followed by 2.5 more sea days. I like the sea days, while my wife prefers ports. So, we had the best of all worlds. The trend still continues with folks not dressing for formal nights, but that's OK, we do. We mostly took time to relax and enjoy as we usually do. I will say that the dining room food was FANTASTIC! The buffet was good too, with hot foods hot and cold foods cold. I'm not a great fan of the "good" deserts being behind glass where one has to ask for them. I was a great fan with the speed of waiters getting drinks. None of the ports was more than we expected, so we weren't unhappy. We prefer the eastern part of Mexico to the western. All-in-all, this was a great cruise which we recommend. Read Less

I would take this cruise again. Shows and onboard entertainment were very giood, staff were very friendly and helpful wherever we went. The ship is showing its age, but this did not detract from the experience. Variety and quality of food, especially in the dining room was top notch. Crown Grill food and service was exceptional. We used the fitness centers extensively and jogged around the promenade deck at 3 revolutions to the mile. Itinerary was good with six sea days and four port days. A good mix of passengers was on this cruise. We did enjoy the onboard shopping and port shopping. Waiters, Room service stewards , bartenders , and service staff were exceptionally friendly and responsive. We had a great experience and will try other Princess cruises. Read Less
